Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best Airbrush Paint Sets for Warhammer 40K
Selecting the right paint set requires considering factors like volume color variety and formulation to ensure your miniatures look great.
Paint Formulation
Most sets for Warhammer 40K use acrylics which are water based and easy to clean. Ensure the paint is prethinned or easy to dilute for airbrush use to avoid clogging your nozzle.
Always check if the paint requires dilution for airbrush use to maintain smooth flow and consistent results.
Color Range
Choose a set that offers a balanced range of base colors metallics and shades. Some sets focus on specific armies which can limit your flexibility for other projects.
Select a palette that covers your specific army needs or a general set if you plan to paint multiple factions.
Volume and Longevity
Larger sets may have higher upfront costs but offer better long term value per milliliter. Consider how many miniatures you plan to paint before buying a small starter kit.
Calculate the cost per milliliter to ensure the volume justifies the price for your hobby goals.
Finish Type
Different sets offer matte metallic or glossy finishes which impact the final look of your models. Matte finishes are popular for most figures but you may need gloss for specific armor or glass elements.
Verify the finish type of the included paints to match your desired aesthetic for your army.
Durability
High quality pigments ensure your paint does not fade chip or peel when exposed to wear. Look for water resistant or sealed paints if your models are handled frequently.
Prioritize paints that are rated for high durability to withstand active tabletop gaming.
Brand Reputation
Established brands like Vallejo and Army Painter provide consistent quality and color matching. Generic sets may vary in quality and color accuracy so check user reviews for reliability.
Stick with reputable brands to ensure consistent color matching and reliable quality across bottles.
Tool Inclusion
Some sets come with brushes clippers and scrapers which can save you money on tools. Ensure the tools are compatible with your size and type of miniatures.
Check if essential tools are included to simplify your setup process for painting.
Safety and Eco-Friendliness
Non-toxic paints are essential for home studios where ventilation may be limited. Look for eco-friendly labels to ensure safer disposal and less environmental impact.
Always choose non-toxic options especially when working in enclosed or shared home spaces.
How to Use and Care for Your Airbrush Paint Sets for Warhammer 40K
Before using your paint set always shake the bottles well to ensure the pigment is fully suspended and mixed. This step is critical to avoid uneven color distribution on your miniatures.
When airbrushing thin your paint with water or medium until it reaches the consistency of milk. This ensures smooth flow and prevents clogging of your airbrush nozzle during detailed work.
Clean your airbrush thoroughly with water or thinners immediately after use to prevent paint from drying inside the tip. Proper maintenance extends the life of your equipment and keeps colors true.
